One of the revelations of the 2017-18 season, Shoals earned her place in The Everest with three Group 1 wins at a variety of distances in three states. The daughter of Fastenet Rock beat the older mares in the spring in the Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington then returned in March to take out the Surround Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick before reappearing in Adelaide two months later to win the Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m). Her part-owner John Messara said both he, fellow owner Jonathan Munz and trainer Anthony Freedman believe the best is still to come from Shoals. “We thought she might be even better than what we think. It’d be a pity to retire her as a three-year-old and we thought why don’t we have another year of racing,” Messara said. “She’s won three Group 1s out of 10 starts which Black Caviar had done, I’m not saying she’s a Black Caviar. This filly has come out of the woodwork, she’s so consistent and so genuine.’’ Shoals runs in the Everest in the slot owned by The Star and Michael Hodgson, GM Business Development and Partnerships at The Star Entertainment Group, said the horse is a good fit for the second running of Australia’s richest race. “This year we have selected and announced our choice of horse earlier in the year,” Hodgson said. “This will enable us to build even more excitement and involvement from our members, guests and staff. We believe in Shoals we have a genuine contender this year and grateful to our wonderful partners in John and Jonathan to join us on this journey.”
